Update: More than 100 divers were outfitted with the ELF tool and particpated in a series of classroom training sessions as well as practice
dives.
News release:
Tal Bixby the president of Reef Protection Inc and the inventor of the dynamic lionfish tool, the ELF, just returned from a week of training divers in Bonaire. Over one hundred experienced divers took part in the event that was hosted and directed by Ramon De Leon, director of the Marine Park of Bonaire.
While many entities have taken action to date, none have taken the actions of the Marine Park of Bonaire where they have begun an all out assault on the invading lionfish. Armed exclusively with the ELF (eliminate lion fish), divers have accepted the mandate to eliminate lionfish on site. After classroom sessions each diver participated with Tal Bixby and two other associates in familiarizing themselves with the ELF and the techniques used to take lionfish. Then the practical workshops began with groups of divers donning their wetsuits and taking to the waters to experience firsthand the exhilaration of bagging the environmental pariah, the venomous lionfish. The lionfish motto is don’t let my beauty fool you, I will sting you into submission and destroy your ecosystem.
While the work has only begun and the Reef Protection group promised to return, this aggressive approach under the careful watchful eye of Ramon De Leon is the first of its kind. The Elf is serialized and the ownership of each ELF remains with the Marine Park. Reef Protection prides itself in a patent pending device that is unique. It is a precisely built, durable, powerful, lethal tool that, when used by trained divers, produces fantastic results. It is designed to be worn by divers for daily dives as well as it has withstood thousands of uses and remains a powerful tool. Reef Protection Incorporated continues to gather data though its web site, lionfishstats.com.
